I saw one of these the other day at Kinokuniya but wasn't sure if I'd be able to figure it out without knowing Japanese... what is your experience with it? Is looking at the diagrams and patterns enough?

If you have a solid foundation of how patterns work and sewing in general, you'll be fine. I can't read Japanese either and I can figure the instructions out based on the diagrams (and I'm by no means a professional seamstress). And if not, I usually have an idea of what they're going for and will just improvise hahah.
