can you hold up the dress to a lamp and take a picture of the fabric through it? I want to see how sheer it is.

Yes. I added three photos of it against my fluorescent lamp. The one showing the shirring against the would be a single layer of the fabric, and the other two are of the sleeve with the shadow of my hand underneath.
